Short answer: Most home red light sessions last 5 to 20 minutes. The correct duration depends on how much light your panel delivers (irradiance, measured in mW/cm²) and how far away you sit. A panel with higher output used at a closer distance requires less time. A panel with lower output used at a greater distance requires more time. A longer session is not automatically better.
Why there is no single correct duration
The important measure is dose: the total light energy delivered to an area, measured in joules per square centimetre (J/cm²). Dose is irradiance multiplied by time. Two people can therefore receive the same dose from very different session lengths, depending on the panel and the distance.
This is why advice such as “ten minutes per day” is not useful on its own. Ten minutes in front of a low-output panel at one metre delivers a very different dose from ten minutes at 15cm in front of a full-body panel. Without the output figure, the duration is only part of the calculation.
A practical starting point
For general home use with a panel that publishes a measured output of approximately 40 to 100 mW/cm² at 15cm:
- When starting: 5 to 10 minutes per area, at a distance of 15 to 30cm.
- Established routine: 10 to 20 minutes per area.
- Frequency: daily, or every second day, is the usual pattern for home use.
If you are treating several areas, for example the back and then the knees, count the time for each area rather than in total. A larger panel covers a larger area at one time, which is the main practical reason to choose a larger model: the complete session takes less time.
More light is not better: the biphasic response
One of the most consistent findings in the photobiomodulation research is the biphasic dose response. The effect increases with dose up to an optimum point, then it flattens, and at very high doses it can reduce. Doubling your session time does not double the effect.
In practice: if you are uncertain, choose shorter and more frequent sessions rather than longer and occasional ones.
Distance changes the dose
Light intensity decreases significantly as you move away from the panel. Sitting at 30cm instead of 15cm substantially reduces the irradiance reaching your skin, so the same session length delivers a much smaller dose.
When you read any output figure, check the distance at which it was measured. A figure quoted without a distance provides no useful information. A reading taken at the surface of the LED will always appear high, but it is very different from the amount of light that reaches you at a normal sitting distance.
How to calculate your own session time
- Find your panel's measured irradiance at a stated distance. If the manufacturer does not publish this figure, that is a reason for caution.
- Decide your working distance and use the same distance every time. Consistency is more important than precision.
- Begin at the shorter end of the range, 5 to 10 minutes, for the first two weeks.
- Increase gradually, and keep sessions regular rather than long.

Frequently asked questions
Is a 30 minute session better than a 10 minute session?
Not necessarily. Because of the biphasic dose response, a dose well above the optimum tends to reduce the effect rather than increase it. A longer session is not a shortcut.
Can I use red light therapy every day?

Does distance or duration matter more?
